Meanwhile Issue 2: Featuring Euan Cook

Soaring Penguin Press' latest issue of Meanwhile… is a great anthology of comic stories by top notch talent, both new and old. It features, Fish 'n' Chips, the first in a series of single page strips by new talent Euan Cook, which gets a great review in Forbidden Planet's Blog: 

"… a fish 'n' chip supper… telling a simple mood piece, musing on isolation, on a lack of focus in life, monologue moaning, capped off with a final few panels where the isolation is hammered home by the moaner's companions complete lack of attention. It's a nothing strip in many ways, but damn, it's an entertaining nothing."

Anna Hymas -‘The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind’

We love Anna Hymas' black and white artworks for 'The Boy Who
Harnessed The Wind' by William Kamkwamba,  Anna's expressive style was
the perfect choice for this bold tale.  Anna was thrilled to be asked
to illustrate the Young Readers edition of this inspiring story, which
has been chosen as one of Amazon's 'Best Children's Books for 2014'.

Thibaud Herem – Town & Country Crest

Thibaud Herem teamed up with MONOGRAM London late last year to help brand and launch a new title for Hearst Magazines called Town & Country magazine.

MONOGRAM’s concept was to highlight the brand’s rich and unrivalled heritage by creating a custom designed crest. Thibaud’s hand crafted style was perfectly suited to this and the finished crest embodied the perfect mix of understated luxury perfect for the magazines demographic. It was also used across a range of marketing materials to celebrate the launch and looked particularly nice as a black foil on black.

Migy Blanco at Books of Wonder

Books of Wonder is one of New York’s well-known children’s bookstore, having been established over two decades ago and is a global place of gathering for book lovers far and wide. Each month they hold a Picture Book panel that features the latest books being published and their creators - Bright’s UK artist Migy Blanco was one of 4 creators invited on Sunday 8th February to share the process of making their books and read aloud their beautiful stories.

Migy’s And Away We Go seemed to be the perfect book for such an occasion, as it is set in NYC and features a hot air balloon lifting off for an adventure into space with various animals jumping on board - and this is what the weekend felt like for Bright — lifting off into new wonderful adventures together in the US!

 Henry Holt published Migy’s book and his editor, Sally Doherty attended the event along with their publicist.

Just Published: Steve May Illustrates More Dennis The Menace

Steve May is back with more anarchic illustrations for the fourth in the series of The Diary of Dennis The Menace: Bash Street Bandit!, published by Puffin this month.

Steve's fluid line has an energy that brilliantly suits author, Steven Butler's, hilarious text. To celebrate the launch of this book, Steve was asked to help out in the 'Draw-along' at the Puffin Virtually Live event.

Tinder by David Roberts – nominated for the long list 2015 Kate Greenaway Medal picture book prize !

Tinder by David Roberts (illustrator) and Sally Gardner (author) (Orion Children’s Books) as reviewed by The Guardian - has been nominated for the long list 2015 Kate Greenaway Medal picture book prize !

This retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Tinderbox is a beautiful book that is very much the inspired collaboration of the outstanding writing of Sally Gardner and stunning pictures by David Roberts which makes this book so absolutely special in every way!

James Grover paints the interior of Zizzi Ristorante in Meadowhall, Sheffield.

James Grover was asked to create murals to decorate the main restaurant wall and corridor and to bring individuality to the site by finding inspiration in local history or landmarks. His work is based around the rich musical heritage of the city of Sheffield and is initially seen as a decorative map. After looking closer at the mural, "...the city centre map’s street names are song titles with the year in which they were released...creating a giant quiz and igniting the natural competitive spirit to solve puzzles. For example, one street is named 'Sing It Back (1998)' – the answer would be 'Moloko'. The corridor features stylised album covers, also showing only the release date", he says. James wanted to hold the viewer's attention with this project and provide a talking point too - the restaurant is in a shopping centre and has a high turnover of customers with shorter meal times. The mural was painted on-site using acrylic and emulsion.

Robyn Neild for Headline Books

Robyn Neild was delighted to be asked to illustrate a new series look
for best selling author Jo Thomas. Robyn worked with our friends in
the Headline art department to create a signature style for Jo’s
novels. Beginning with re-jacketing the runaway hit ‘The Oyster
Catcher’  Robyn worked with the team to produce a beautiful cover, in
her fabulous watercolour style. Robyn has since created covers for
‘The Chestnut Tree’, which was released at the end of last year and
‘The Olive Grove’ which is out in March.

David Sparshott – Game of Inches

Late last year David Sparshott was approached by Brookyln’s finest Doubleday & Cartwright and asked to work on a huge project for US corporate giants General Electric (GE).

The agency were striving to build a sports-relevant campaign to articulate GE’s Internet of Things innovations. As athletes know, incremental improvements — in training, nutrition, or strategy — can lead to major gains. Using this analogy the agency build a campaign to show the same rules apply to industry in the information age. A content-driven campaign known as “Game of Inches” was build around this premise.

To bring this all to life they turned to David, seeing his illustration as having the tactile quality required to communicate the human story behind the technology. As well as still illustrations, his work was also animated into a series of short spots. You can watch the full set here.

The campaign rolled out across Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter, Tumblr and a YouTube campaign promoting the “Game of Inches’ during the Super Bowl XLIX.

5 Bright Artists Nominated for 2015 Kate Greenaway Award & Benji Moves On to Longlist!

The entire Bright team would like to offer a huge congratulations to Benji Davies, who's illustrated book On Sudden Hill with author Linda Sarah has been chosen as one of the twenty titles long listed for the globally prestigious CILIP Kate Greenaway Children's Book Award 2015!

The Kate Greenaway Medal was established in 1955, and is awarded annually for outstanding book illustration for children and young people. The winner receives a golden medal awarded by CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals), £500 worth of books to donate to a library of their choice and £5000 cash prize. Previous winners include world famous and publishing celebrities Jon Klassen, Catherine Rayner and Emily Gravett.

Bright were humbled to have been part of the nominations last year with Nicola O'Byrne's Open Very Carefully (Nosy Crow) and Yasmeen Ismail's Time for Bed Fred (Bloomsbury) - both of which went on to win The Waterstones Children's Book Award and V&A Best Picture Book Award independently. Last October we were also excited to see another five of our Bright creatives nominated for the Kate Greenaway award 2015, each of whom have incredible years ahead of them with new books, events and even more concepts to be sold!

It is a huge honour to be nominated for such a prestigious award as Kate Greenaway Children's Book Award and so we all would like to extend our congratulations to Gabriel Alborozo, Yasmeen Ismail, Nicola O'Byrne and Sebastien Braun for appearing on the exclusive list this year.

Making it through to the next round of the award, On Sudden Hill is the timeless and poignant story of friendship, adventure and childhood told through the delicate and colourful illustrations of Benji Davies. Internationally acclaimed Benji won Oscar's First Book Prize last year with The Storm Whale (Simon & Schuster) and continues to wow his avid fans with a highly anticipated follow up title publishing this year Grandad's Island (Simon & Schuster). With a golden year ahead of him already, we would like to wish the best of luck to Benji and On Sudden Hill when the shortlist is announced on Tuesday 17 March.
