The Ruth Borchard Collection is the UK’s only public collection of self-portraits by British and Irish artists, with 150 works and growing. The Original Collection was the life-long project of Ruth Borchard, who built up a collection of 100 self-portraits by the most distinguished twentieth-century artists in Britain. The Prize offers a unique opportunity for new and established artists alike to compete for a £10,000 prize, and the chance for their work to be purchased for the Ruth Borchard Next Generation Collection. Emily Tull's portrait, which has been shortlisted, is from a series of hand-embroidered works of art.
Here's what she says about the work:
"In this series beauty and fragility are enhanced. Hand stitching takes the place of drawing, abstracting the subject, breaking down the features to a more vulnerable state. The thread 'melting' into the fabric representing delicate 'skin'."You can see her portrait "Fragility #2" exhibit along with other entries for the prize at Piano Nobile Kings Place,London until the October 9thEmily Tull is represented by Artist Partners
The mural on the wall is on the outside of the brewery Twisted Barrel Ale. It's a new brewery which has just opened up in Coventry. The imagery on the wall was drawn from an open brief- they wanted a representation of Coventry. Stewart chose to use the story of Lady Godiva and Peeping Tom to depict for the wall painting.
Prior to the bombing during the blitz, Coventry was a real pretty city with a vast amount of Tudor buildings. After the war the council pulled what was left down with a view of rebuilding it and making it a modern town - but it was never finished. As a reference to this Stewart have drawn lots of tudor style buildings based on the remaining ones in Coventry.
The labels design was once again an open brief, though Stewart needed to have connections with Coventry.
On the label design you will see the Tudor buildings, Coventry's three spires, doves (as a reference to Coventry being a city of peace and reconciliation). I drew a lad and a lass in celebration of the tag line 'more folk than punk' from the brewery.

They broke the mould when they made this issue’s cover star Jimmy Edgar.
Larry Rostant's portrait of Jimmy Edgar is psychedelic, freaky, funky — and that’s not just his music. With a life well lived that’s reflected in the extraordinary scope of his albums and DJ sets, he’s not afraid to be different — and celebrates that difference.
A celebration of creativity, freedom and diversity is something that dance music should be about, but is something all too often lost in the chase for filthy lucre. Jimmy’s a star like they used to make, someone with something to say, and it seems that now more of us are listening than ever.

Earlier in the year the team from BBC’s Antique Roadshow Detectives visited our office to film part of an episode at Artist Partners HQ. The story centres around Shirley Thompson, an AP artist represented in the 60's - 70's whose beautiful illustrations were found in a skip many decades ago, preserved and cherished before finding their way back to her family all these years afterwards.
Shirley’s fashion illustrations are exquisite and the artwork rescued in this story were for a Burberry catalogue in the 60s.
A lovely story and an interesting watch! You can catch the episode here and scroll to 16mins 27 seconds
enjoy!
