Matt Murphy created this atmospheric illustration for France Amerique Magaazine to commemorate Bastille Day, or French National Day - celebrated today.
Matt describes his story behind the beautiful scene: “My intention was to reflect the joy people must have felt as they celebrated France’s national day in wartime New York City, 80 years ago. The story begins with confetti being thrown from the balcony on the left. It leads us down to the couple running towards La Marseillaise, where people are dancing on the sidewalk. Above, a French sailor and an American woman embrace in a symbol of the love between the two nations. The purple sky against the brown buildings and the green elevated train line allow the lights from the French community center-cum-mess hall to draw the viewer in and make them wonder: ‘What happens next?'"
