Dynamic and opulent designs are created by Patrick Boyer for the Buxton International Festival.
Pat worked on a new 2024 program cover, five opera promotions, and a billboard design. Having worked with the client on last year's season, he was well aligned with their aspirations for the art. The design brief was open to interpretation, and the client expressed confidence in Pat's work, stating his previous designs were "spot on." He aimed to maintain the elegance of his past achievements, while introducing alternative compositional elements for a sense of freshness.
Pat explains that the cover, his most recent artwork for the festival, reflects a summer celebration of opera, music, books, and jazz. Ties to the individual operas were welcomed, and the client gave Pat a lot of freedom for a fresh approach -
"I came up with a cover similar to last year's, tying in the elements and performers of the 2024 season, but with a more artistic approach. The individual opera designs were completed early in the season, so there wasn't much information available from the directors. For those, I researched the productions. Some operas, like Carmen, were more modern, serious, and gritty in nature, while others, like La Canterina, required something a little more comical and light."
Collaborating with Disney LATAM, Luiza Laffitte designs assets for their 100 Years project.
Luiza was thrilled to be part of the Disney 100 Years Assets project with other artists, and worked on cute images that were presented to the stores globally within an assets catalogue.
Luiza explains, "To commemorate a century of enchanting tales, Disney extended a special invitation to artists worldwide, and I was fortunate enough to be among the chosen few. For this extraordinary project, each artist was tasked with reimagining their favorite Disney character, and without hesitation, I selected the beloved Donald Duck as my muse. The overarching goal was to craft a captivating collection of illustrations, destined to be featured in a catalog celebrating 100 years of Disney magic. This catalog, brimming with artistic interpretations, was intended to serve as a valuable resource for Disney stores globally. I’m proud with the opportunity to contribute alongside an array of talented artists and expressing my creative vision through the endearing Donald Duck was an immensely rewarding and cherished experience."
Katie Ponder has been commissioned to create a glamorous series of artworks for the the five-star Beaumont Hotel in Mayfair, London. Drawing inspiration from the elegant art deco interiors of the hotel, Katie kept things colourful and patterned.
“Initially I started the work using a muted palette but the client was keen to something bright and bold. This led me to the oranges and blues along with a few coffee coloured tones for contrast and I think this worked really well to create a bold statement. The bold colours of the work contrast with the elegant monochrome 1920s décor of the hotel and bring a burst of colour and pattern. The style of the work work is an echo of 1920s style of the Beaumont Hotel – a style I particularly love and often draw inspiration from.”
Lucy Rose has been commissioned by Hardie Grant to illustrate their latest Hidden Histories book. This iteration, The Hidden Histories of Flowers, has allowed Lucy to employ her rich, textured style to highlight the depth and vibrancy of flora past and present.
“I created the illustrations firstly by researching all the flowers in real detail. I then spend time sketching each flower by hand, working out the compositions which was important in this project as I had to find a way to incorporate multiple plants into one image, focusing on how they interact with each other. Once the sketches were right, I work out my rough colour scheme, draw them on my iPad and add lots of organic textures and then fine tune the colours.”
