The Art of the Scarf

The Art of the Scarf (Design Projects, Illustration Ltd, illustrator)

Fashion brand Talbots join forces with Jessica Durrant and Karen Mabon to create two unique scarves to raise support in the fight against breast cancer.

Talbots commissioned three internationally renowned female artists including our very own Jessica Durrant anbd Karen Mabon to interpret the courage, strength and determination of women. The result is their 3rd annual limited-edition collection of one-of-a-kind scarves which are available to purchase HERE

Jessica and Karen both shared with Talbots the inspiration behind their scarves:

Jessica, "I wanted to create a light, ethereal work of art, and I use flowers and butterflies in my artwork as symbols of endless change and a quiet strength."

Karen, "As females we are strongest when we lift each other up. I wanted the scarf to celebrate the importance of building networks and helping other women"

Startworks 2020 open call to all new graduates!

Startworks 2020 open call to all new graduates! (Awards, Events, illustrator, The Artworks)
The Artworks is incredibly excited to announce an open call for new graduates to apply for our Startworks mentoring programme!

Since the agency was founded, Startworks has been helping new graduates bridge the gap between leaving university and kickstarting their career as an illustrator. We continue to successfully represent many artists who have joined the agency through Startworks; helping to expand portfolios, build client relationships and navigate the creative industry.

If you have graduated as part of the class of 2020 from an illustration, design or arts degree and think you’re ready to leap into the world of professional illustration, then we want to hear from you!

Please send a short introduction, no more than 5 low-res jpegs and a link to your online portfolio, to submissions@theartworksinc.com . To reiterate, this is only open to those who have graduated in 2020. Please be aware that due to the overwhelming amount of applications, we can only respond to those who have been successful, but we thank everyone for taking the time to get in touch.

Best of luck! We look forward to hearing from the graduates of 2020!

Christopher Nielsen for Pixar

Christopher Nielsen for Pixar (Children’s Books, illustrator, Phosphor Art, Publishing Jobs)

Phosphor's Christopher Nielsen was commissioned to create some images for Pixar’s Instagram feed with characters from The Incredibles, Monsters Inc., Wall-E, Up, Coco and Finding Nemo having fun in the sun with the theme “Any weather is better with you”.

Chris enjoyed the challenge of illustrating existing (and rather famous!) characters, as opposed to designing characters for picture books himself, as he is more used to doing.

Mark Boardman – Royal Botanical Gardens Kew

Mark Boardman – Royal Botanical Gardens Kew (Exhibitions, illustrator, Meiklejohn)

We’re absolutely thrilled to share this beautiful series of illustrations created by Mark Boardman to accompany the new Travel The World At Kew Exhibition, which is open now in their global garden. Following three months of closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Kew Gardens has reopened and is showcasing its uniquely diverse landscape by presenting an exhibition of words and images linked specifically to areas within their gardens, reconnecting visitors with nature and satisfying their frustrated wanderlust.

Tasked with bringing the specially commissioned poetry and prose to life, Mark’s illustrations were inspired by the Royal Botanic Garden's selection of worldwide plants and trees, transporting visitors on a journey to each country.

Talking about his contribution to the exhibition, Mark has described his pleasure at working on this inspiring project, “I felt so fortunate to have this commission to focus on during lock down. Not only did it allow me to immerse myself in researching the many botanic wonders at Kew, it gave me the opportunity to feel like I was escaping on my own global adventure.” To see more of Mark’s work, click here.
