Stonefly Sculptures

Gail Armstrong exceeds herself with these shoebox sculptures for Stonefly in Italy.
The brief was to create two different environments which appear to have developed and unfolded from the shoeboxes themselves, one summery and rural, the other youthful and active. Gail built the pieces keeping in mind that they may be animated in the future, she says of the commission; "The trick with the images was to use multiple layers of paper bonded together where the sculpture had to look convincing as a cardboard shoebox, and single layers of paper where the sculpture required depth and form."

God Loves You

Our ace paper-sculptress Gail Armstrong has been enjoying a busy period.

This recent commission from Brigham Young University, sees Gail creating the title page and inserts for an article in the BYU magazine. Gail says: "The client, Doug Thomas wanted it to have the feel of an illuminated manuscript, but not to look too 'old fashioned'. I kept the colouring clean and crisp with the sharp white background, and the imagery in the title page links to the imagery in the illuminated roman numerals that are used in the main text."

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

This stunning piece of paper sculpture is fresh from the fingertips of in demand paper artist Gail Armstrong.

Commissioned by Macy's for their 84th Thanksgiving Day Parade, this complex image is being used for posters with elements of it featuring on their website. It was an incredibly complicated job which saw Gail working to please both Macy's and the big balloon clients. If anyone can do it, Gail can!
