Graphic Novel – STAGDALE Part 2 by Frances Castle
Out this month is Frances Castle's second chapter in her atmospheric and visually arresting graphic novel series, STAGDALE.
This series charts the tale of two children, Max and Kathy, both outsiders and how their lives become inextricably linked to each other, across the expanse of 37 years.
In STAGDALE Part 2, it’s the autumn of 1938 and it’s Kristallnacht, a time of grave danger for many Jews in Germany. Twelve year old Berliner Max and his family are desperately trying to find a way out of Nazi Germany. When a chance comes up for Max to escape, he has no choice but to leave his parents and take a dangerous train journey alone across Europe on the Kindertransport to Britain. He doesn’t know it yet but he’s bound for Stagdale, a remote English village, a stranger in a strange land. Will Stagdale be his salvation or his undoing?
“… Castle’s illustrations are a treat for the eyes and it’s beautifully crafted details that evoke a time long gone by, but they are still modern and prescient.” Taken from a review by Karl Andy Foster.
STAGDALE Part 2 is published by Clay Pipe Music and Frances has also released a Flexi-disc and digital EP, by her musical alter ego ’The Hardy Tree’ that soundtracks the graphic novel.
