Our very first Illustrator in Residence: Call for entries

Today we are announcing a call for our first illustrator in residence. We are looking for an illustrator to play an important part in our Housewarming festival of illustration in April and May and to record the exciting events in the run up to House of Illustration’s opening this summer.

This six-month residency is an exciting opportunity for an illustrator to get involved in all aspects of House of Illustration life, from online illustrations and blogs to displays, talks, education projects and community workshops.

We would particularly welcome applications from emerging illustrators – we want to find and promote new illustration talent!

The illustrator in residence will:

• Have their work showcased on the House of Illustration website, alongside an individual blog on the residency

• Have the opportunity to display work created during their residency at House of Illustration

• Be engaged with the public through talks or workshops

• The winning illustrator will receive a £6,000 fee plus a materials budget of up to £1,000

The House of Illustration residency will be an annual event and this inaugural residency has been made possible thanks to the generous support of The Barbara and Philip Denny Trust.

The residency will run from late April to October 2014. The closing date for submissions is Tuesday 18th March.

For information on the residency and details on how to apply please visit our illustrator in residence webpage

Best of luck!

Fashion Horoscopes

Montana Forbes completes a set of horoscopes for IKON images.
The three here; Sagittarius, Pisces and Gemini are just a taster of the beauties Montana has created for the company who primarily deal with stock imagery. Montana says "I’ve always had a keen interest in the horoscopes and was really excited to tackle the subject matter for the very first time. After much research, I was inspired to create unique fashion and beauty portraits that incorporated elements and characteristics associated with each sign but without them being clichéd depictions." See all twelve in Montana's portfolio.

Davie Shipyard

Davie Shipyard in Canada commission Ian Naylor for several epic 3D views.

Chantier Davie is the oldest shipyard in Canada, and last year they approached Ian to draw andanimate an aerial view of the facility for use on their website and in editorial. Ian says "I was naturally interested since I love ships, particularly offshore working vessels, they are such giant, robust and technical machines, self-contained for demanding work in some of the world's harshest environments. As the job progressed it was clear that other illustrations would be required, they were kind enough to fly me over to Canada last month and I was able to gather the reference I needed to embark on the ongoing production and tour Davie facility at Lévis, across the river from Quebec city". Being on site was a treat for Ian, though having to brave a minus 30 wind-chill and a frozen St Lawrence was a challenge. The reward however was "a dream job for a charming and enthusiastic client".  Watch the animation...

Building Economies

Making business look beautiful, Gail Armstrong creates this paper sculpture for PM Network magazine.

Commissioned by Hugo Espinozo, senior art director at Imagination, the image is in the February issue of the monthly publication for the Project Management Institute (PMI). Gail's creation illustrates "6 Markets to Watch: Look for the next wave of project opportunity in one of these 6 climbing economies”. She says: "It discusses the business potential in these building economies and the many ways in which those countries are changing, developing and investing in themselves." Gail chose to focus on Nigeria - oil/energy industry, Panama - canal expansion, Indonesia - infrastructure through telecommunications, Chile - building infrastructure through information technology, Turkey – construction; in particular transport links and Vietnam - factory construction. After submitting several ideas to illustrate the article, the concept of using flowers to represent the growth of these 6 different countries was selected. Gail says "The flower heads have petals made from maps of the relevant countries. By choosing to use a fairly simple, non-specific flower shape and by carefully placing the petals, it is still possible to read the map and the country name. The flower centres and stamens, which echo the map colours, represent the country’s relevant investment area."

Jonny Duddle New Picture Book: Gigantosaurus

Gigantosaurus, is the gorgeous, brand new picture book about Dinosaurs from award winning author and illustrator Jonny Duddle. His beautiful landscapes and detailed, lush forests of ancient ferns are a playground setting for dinokids; Bonehead, Tiny, Fin and Bill as they go on their adventures in the Cretaceous sun. They meet a triceratops, a diplodocus, a stegosaurus and a very scary Gigantosaurus in this crazy prehistoric caper. The new hardback edition comes with an enormous poster featuring the Gigantosaurus chasing our four little heroes. This is Jonny’s fourth picture book published by Templar Publishing.

Steve May: Diary of Dennis the Menace

Steve May's lifetime ambition to draw his comic heroes Dennis The Menace and Gnasher has been realised at last. Diary of Dennis The Menace is the first title in a brand new series, written by Steven Butler and published this month by Puffin. Steve was initially asked to submit samples of both characters - the brief he was given:  "Dennis would need to retain the high smile that sits just below the nose and eyes, plus his typical features – spikey hair, red and black jumper and shorts etc, but the Beano are keen for the illustrator to leave their mark on this. Being Dennis the Menace, the illustrations can afford to be anarchic and quite dominant throughout the book.”

Of course, Steve loves a bit of anarchy and his response was to produce these amazing character designs! Gordon Tait from DC Thomson & Co aka The Beano HQ said: " I think it's safe to say we were all very excited when Steve's initial drawings came through and for us the choice was pretty much a no-brainer as they say… it was exactly what we were looking for."

Steve went on to illustrate the cover and black and white illustrations for the insides, with added splats, ink blots, fingerprints and paw prints to emphasise the handwritten diary feel.
