House of Illustration – 2017 Exhibition Programme

House of Illustration 2017 Exhibition Programme We're thrilled to bring you news of what's in store at House of Illustration next year. Ten exhibitions across our three galleries will explore fashion, fetishism, anime, architecture, gentrification, children's illustration and more. They include work from our Illustrators in Residence, Nous Vous Collective, and specially commissioned drawings by Lucinda Rogers.

Jo Brocklehurst: Nobodies and Somebodies Main Gallery, 3 Feb - 14 May 2017 Jo Brocklehurst captured the uncompromising vibrancy of late 20th century subcultures in London, Berlin and New York. Her figurative paintings from fetish clubs record experiments with sex, androgyny and couture that later inspired the mainstream fashion collections of Jean Paul Gaultier, while her best-known portraits from the 1980s offer a female perspective on punk. More information Gerald Scarfe: Stage and Screen Main Gallery, 22 Sep 2017 - 21 Jan 2018 A rare opportunity to explore the extensive but little-known production designs by celebrated political cartoonist Gerald Scarfe, with storyboards, costumes and props from Pink Floyd's The Wall, Disney's Hercules and English National Ballet's The Nutcracker. More information Lucinda Rogers: On Gentrification South Gallery, 28 Oct 2017 - 11 Feb 2018 Drawing directly from life, Lucinda Rogers captures intimate details and broad views of cities around the world. In our fourth illustrator commission she explores the tensions between old and new, focussing on East London's 200-year-old Ridley Road Market and a new block of luxury flats soon to cast its shadow. More information Quentin Blake: The Life of Birds Quentin Blake Gallery, 5 May - 1 Oct 2017 “I have always liked drawing birds. I can't quite explain why but it may be because like us, they are on two legs and have expressive gestures.” An exhibition of original Quentin Blake illustrations from his book The Life of Birds, including new drawings exhibited here for the very first time. More information John Yeoman and Quentin Blake: 50 Years of Children's Books Quentin Blake Gallery, 6 Oct 2017 - 4 Mar 2018 John Yeoman is Quentin Blake’s longest standing collaborator. This exhibition brings together their work over the past 50 years, since their first collaboration, A Drink of Water, in 1960. Their latest book, All The Year Round, will be launched by Andersen Press to coincide with the exhibition. More information Anime Architecture: Backgrounds of Japan Main Gallery, 26 May - 10 Sep 2017 An exhibition of hand-crafted backgrounds from science fiction anime films including cyberpunk classic Ghost in the Shell. Inspired by Asia's emerging megacities, Tokyo's production designers constructed fictional worlds that reflected an unnervingly real story of ruthless urban development. More information The Book Illustration Competition Longlist 2017: Mansfield Park South Gallery, 11 Feb - 12 Mar 2017 An exhibition of exceptional entries into our seventh Book Illustration Competition with The Folio Society. Illustrations of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park will hang side-by-side with past Folio commissions from a range of established and emerging illustrators including Quentin Blake, John Vernon Lord and Anne-Marie Jones, as well as Anna and Elena Balbusso. More information Nous Vous: Three Men in a Boat South Gallery, 18 Mar - 11 Jun 2017  Our 2016 Illustrators in Residence - the collective Nous Vous, exhibit the results of six months spent exploring the nature of collaborative work. More information Jacqueline Ayer: Drawing on Thailand South Gallery, 17 Jun - 22 Oct 2017 A childhood friend of Milton Glaser, colleague of Andy Warhol and fashion illustrator for Vogue, Jacqueline Ayer's work was a unique addition to children's literature in 1950-60s America. Her picture books brought a bold vision of Thai life to the western market using pen and pops of colour to document the back lanes of Bangkok. More information Linda Kitson: Drawings and Projects Quentin Blake Gallery, 3 Mar - 30 Apr 2017  Linda Kitson’s line drawings have recorded seminal moments in British history. This exhibition charts a lifetime of putting pen to paper including her drawings of the 1982 Falklands War as the first female artist officially commissioned to accompany troops into combat. Mardo El-Noor’s Collaboration with Tom Scott Is Exhibited in New Zealand Parliament

Phosphor's digital artist Mardo El-Noor recently worked on an exciting project with award-winning editorial cartoonist Tom Scott. Mardo created 8 large-scale digital paintings of Tom’s cartoons, the oldest of which was from 1988. The original cartoons were black and white felt-tip illustrations, on yellowing, coffee-stained paper and were all based on our impact on the environment.

Alan Kitching – A Life in Letterpress

Alan Kitching is one of the world’s foremost practitioners of letterpress typographic design and printmaking. He is renowned for his expressive use of wood and metal letterforms in creating visuals for commissions and limited edition prints. He lives and works at The Typography Workshop in Kennington, south London, which he shared with designer, writer and partner Celia Stothard (deceased 2010).

Good news all round from The Bookseller’s Children’s Conference 2015

2015 was a record-breaking year in growth and turnover. Last year the numbers were the best since Neilson reports began. The Bookseller Children’s Conference took place on Tuesday 29th September; with Bright opening our first exhibition, ‘Where The Story Began’;

Frances Castle: A Kid’s Guide to IWM London

Frances Castle was commissioned by the Imperial War Museum to create illustrations for their new Kid's Guide to their London museum. The book is aimed at children aged 7 to 11 and had to be accessible and appealing to both girls and boys. IWM London re-opened  it's doors after a refurbishment in July 2014, in time for the Centenary of the First World War and Frances' brief was to interpret the newly designed atrium with it's displays of iconic planes and other objects. She also produced a series of comic strips telling stories of people's experience of war and conflict up to the present day.

Chris Moore for The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

A new museum dedicated to the art of storytelling, funded by legendary Star Wars director, George Lucas, is to be built in Chicago and planned to be completed in 2018.

We are extremely proud to learn that artwork from Chris Moore is one of the first to be selected to exhibit.
