Aleksei Bitskoff: Introducing Pigby and Friends for NatWest

The very talented Aleksei Bitskoff (represented by Arena) is responsible for designing NatWest's new piggy characters, Pigby and Friends for the launch of their children's savings account. NatWest ran a competition for kids to design a piggy bank, the winner was 13 year old Kwamina Longdon and, with the help from the folks at Aardman Animations, Aleksei was asked to base his characters on Kwamina's drawing and develop them further to include a fashionista pig, a skater dude, an artistic pig, a nerdy one and a sporty one, along with Pigby "the little helper" who loves saving money.

World Book Day Illustrator: Alex T Smith

Alex T Smith is the official illustrator for World Book Day 2014. He was thrilled to be asked to provide the illustrations for this year's promotional material. The brief was great fun, picking up on all of Alex’s favourite things to draw, appealing to children from nursery age to ten years old. Watch out for Alex as he tours the country this month visiting book shops, festivals and children's learning centres.

Now in its 17th year, World Book Day is the biggest celebration of books, reading, authors & illustrators of its kind, for children of all ages in the UK. Designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, it is marked in over 100 countries worldwide.

The major aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to discover the power of reading for pleasure by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. Every year, over 14 million £1 book tokens are distributed to over 46,650 educational establishments nationwide (nursery and pre-school through to secondary) – one for nearly every child in full-time education in the country.

Steve May: Diary of Dennis the Menace

Steve May's lifetime ambition to draw his comic heroes Dennis The Menace and Gnasher has been realised at last. Diary of Dennis The Menace is the first title in a brand new series, written by Steven Butler and published this month by Puffin. Steve was initially asked to submit samples of both characters - the brief he was given:  "Dennis would need to retain the high smile that sits just below the nose and eyes, plus his typical features – spikey hair, red and black jumper and shorts etc, but the Beano are keen for the illustrator to leave their mark on this. Being Dennis the Menace, the illustrations can afford to be anarchic and quite dominant throughout the book.”

Of course, Steve loves a bit of anarchy and his response was to produce these amazing character designs! Gordon Tait from DC Thomson & Co aka The Beano HQ said: " I think it's safe to say we were all very excited when Steve's initial drawings came through and for us the choice was pretty much a no-brainer as they say… it was exactly what we were looking for."

Steve went on to illustrate the cover and black and white illustrations for the insides, with added splats, ink blots, fingerprints and paw prints to emphasise the handwritten diary feel.
